Sync Shortcuts (Android - Windows)

more options

With the removal of a 'speed dial' from the recentish big update of Firefox for Android I thought I could use the Shortcuts (on the somewhat limited homepage options) to do the same job.

But these don't seem to sync with Firefox for Windows and there's no Shortcuts option in the sync menu. I switch between two platforms a lot and having those shortcuts sync is really important as I add pages for looking at at different times on different devices.

I *know* I could use bookmarks, but that's another couple of clicks every time I want to go to a webpage - over the course of a day that could be hundreds.

It's used to be possible to have a syned homepage in Firefox for Android. It's still possible in Vivaldi, Opera & Brave. But I'd like to use Firefox.

Anyone any info on how I can sync the homepage Shortcuts across Firefox for Android and for Windows?

Or is there another way of having a synced speed dial-style homepage on Firefox on different platforms?

There is a way ... look at the prefs.js under your default profile and extract the tag

user_pref("browser.newtabpage.pinned", ... with all your shortcuts, their ip, etc.

You can paste that in the dest Firefox which should not be running. Then you can start Firefox and all your shortcuts are there. The icons will take some time to populate but this helped me since I will not recreate 24 shortcuts when I move platforms. I agree with the OP that this functionality is needed.

Just to add to what kairis wrote:

I found my pinned sites in the "prefs-1.js" file, rather than the "prefs.js" file.

That file is located in (yourusername)>mozilla>firefox>uiv98cn0.default-release

I assume that last folder might be subject to change.

And yes, Firefox needs to sync more by default, or at least give users the ability to sync more.

EDIT: The above was in Linux Mint Cinnamon. In Windows 11 the file was just "prefs.js" and located under:

(your username)>AppData>Roaming>Mozilla>Firefox>Profiles>qmdle9p9.default-release
