It seems Firefox 17.0.1 causes Ubuntu 10.04 to crash to the ubuntu login script. I can't get into safe mode, or read any crash reports. Is there a way to run firefox and get any output? All I can figure out is it isn't happening on earlier version of firefox.

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

Your plugins listed in the system details list shows an older Flash 9 plugin in addition to the current Flash 11.2 release.

  1. Shockwave Flash 9.0 r999
  2. Shockwave Flash 11.2 r202

You should uninstall the Shockwave Flash 9.0 r999 version that was probably initially installed as part of your Linux distribution and never updated or removed.
