Alert Box Sending of password did not succeed.

When I try to get my email I get an Alert Box that says, Sending of password did not succeed. Mail server mail.comcast.net responded LOGIN failed. When I close that box, I get another box Login failed. It says Login to server Comcast.net failed. It has three choices, Retry, Enter new password, Cancel. Neither retry nor entering a new password works. Shutting off the computer and restarting does not work either.

I have this problem too, but not all the time. Sometimes during the day it works instantly and at other times I get this error message, so (presumably) my settings must be correct. I can receive emails OK. I have Windows 7 and Thunderbird 31
