Recently I have not been able to open attachments directly from email messages in Thunderbird without first saving the attachment. When trying to open the message attachment it saves it in the Downloads folder with zero bites of data rather than opening the file. I have selected to prompt what to do with the file and I'm asking it to open the file not save it. I have checked the attachment options in the preference settings on the iMac. I tried changing (deleting) extensions. All seems fine for attachment handling. I have tried changing the download destination folder in Chrome to something other than the "Download" folder in attempt to have Thunderbird not use the "Download" folder when trying to open a file. I'm unable to stop Thunderbird from sending the file to the "Download" folder and open the file directly from the mail message. It appears to be corrupting the file as it sends it to the folder. This is a new problem in the last few weeks. Thunderbird 31.6. iMac 10.10.2 Chrome Version 32.0.1700.77

Thunderbird can only open a file is it knows what to do with ti.

In Thunderbird > preferences locate attachments and set the location you want. Please also delete all handlers that are registered there (the delete key) if a file is not in the list you get asked what to do with it. so deleting the list can help in this sort of situation.

Thanks for the reply.

Thunderbird is trying to use the correct application to open the file. Here is a sample of what Adobe comes back with.

"Acrobat could not open '0310-000339-inv02nmr500.pdf' because it is either not a supported file type or because the file has been damaged (for example, it was sent as an email attachment and wasn't correctly decoded).

To create an Adobe PDF document, go to the source application. Then print the document to Adobe PDF."

This happens with all files attached within an email. As mentioned above, if I first save the file there is no problem opening it. I have tried deleting the extension from Thunderbird.

Any other thoughts?

One other thing to mention.

If I double click the attachment from the mail message it will not save properly or open no matter where I save the file.

If I right click the file and "save as" I'm able to save the file and open it no problem.
