I can't get Firefox to make sound. I'm sure my hardware works, the volume is 100% (can't get it to 11), either plugins are present or unnecessary. I can download the target file (with video downloadhelper, for example) and get sound playing it with mplayer or xine. I've tried with npr.org, with YouTube. I've checked the sound and audio parameters in about:config.

Is Firefox supposed to beep at me? I have the typeahead.soundURL set to beep, but it never beeps.

Does this only happen when the HTML5 media player is used or also when a plugin (Flash) is used?

Did you check the Pulse Audio Volume panel and possible mixer applets to see if there is a player active when you play a media file?

Make sure you have the latest GStreamer and FFmpeg updates for your Linux distribution.

It happens on nytimes.com (html 5), comedy central (flash), and youtube - and any other site with audio I have tried.

I don't run pulse, so I started it. It tells me there are no hardware audio devices (?!) but the virtual device has its volume at maximum.

I check for updated packages every day. I confirmed that my gstreamer and ffmpeg packages are current.

I can play an SWF with Adobe's flashplayer and hear the sound.

My laptop in battery mode does not play sound. Also, I turned off sound on a DVD and removed that, but that had also set sound for the laptop to off.

My laptop is plugged in. The BIOS has no setting to disable sound. I can't 'turn off sound on a DVD' other than turning off sound for the system. I haven't watched a DVD in 3 years.

I just remembered an important fact: the built-in audio jack has, apparently, splayed out, no longer makes a good connection to most plugs. I now use a usb-audio adaptor and mute the internal speakers. If I load the drivers for the built-in audio as card 0 Firefox will make sound on them. But it won't make sound on the usb-audio system even though every other app does, even if it is card 0.
