I've been using Thunderbird for years, and this issue just recently started: When I try to insert an image into a new message, Thunderbird freezes. The only way I can shut Thunderbird down is to go to Task Manager and click End Task.

If I open Thunderbird in Troubleshooting Mode (i.e., hold Shift down when opening Thunderbird), then I'm able to insert an image.

I have no special themes or extensions enabled and am running Windows 10 Pro.

If it works in safe/troubleshoot mode, and there are no add-ons, you probably need to disable hardware acceleration in Settings/General, or 'reset toolbars & controls' and 'make changes & restart' at the safe mode prompt to repair a broken layout.

What kind of antivirus do you use?

Antivirus software can take a closer look at subjects such as documents and PDF files. add pictures) can also play a small role in this.

They can probably hinder your tasks further if this protection software is used to protect your system.

be sure to use the configuration to be sure and the settings for this and whether you can simply adjust these functions?

Also disabling this will give progress in this regard.

But then you are unprotected. please take this into account.

Thanks for your suggestions; however, I've already tried disabling my antivirus and a firewall. That didn't solve the issue.

I've used Thunderbird for 20 years on multiple computers and have inserted hundreds (if not thousands) of images into messages without ever having a problem—until just a couple of weeks ago.

As stated in my initial post, the issue disappears when I boot into Thunderbird Troubleshoot Mode. Interestingly, although this disables any add-ons and customizations, I have none to disable. Nonetheless, there is some provision in Troubleshoot Mode which allows me to successfully insert images without locking up Thunderbird.

Hello there again.

Some processes of anti-virus software cause delays in investigating the chosen topics that they scan even better than the regular tasks.

This will include PDF files and documents. That can cause a certain delay effect.

This can cause a moment of delay and the software gets a kind of hang effect.

Thank you, SFHowes. The "reset toolbars & controls" > "make changes & restart" did the trick!

(Incidentally, I did not have to "disable hardware acceleration in Settings/General")
