Ctrl-N for New Window gives me a gratuitous tab. How do you turn that off?

Every time a new window is created (e.g., via "Ctrl-N"), besides the single tab with my default site, I also get a gratuitous tab with a search engine. The first thing I then ALWAYS do is delete this tab. I'd sure just like to turn off that stupid gratuitous tab from showing up in the first place! I scoured the "Options" dialog, but it doesn't seem to have anything related to this.

What's up?

== I reinstalled Firefox (about a month ago)

Firefox doesn't do this by default.

An extension is probably the likely cause of this. What search engine appears?

If you close Firefox, then start Firefox in Safe Mode, does the problem still occur? For instructions on starting in Safe Mode, see Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

If it doesn't occur, see Troubleshooting Extensions and Themes to figure out which extension is the cause.
