no longer able to open emails in Hotmail (using latest v of Firefox), but works fine in IE; I tried all the obvious things.

Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.

  • "Clear the Cache": Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"
  • "Remove the Cookies" from sites causing problems: Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).

  • Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

i hear that the problem was with hotmail which had just updated its site: their testing showed that it worked with Mozilla but had (understandably) not taken into account the Flashblock (or advert) add-on with which it was incompatible. In any case, all works fine again now (so it was either hotmail or firefox that fixed it). (clearing out all cookies was among the more 'obvious things' that I had tried.) Nice that you took the time to respond! Thanks.
