On some websites, all the information appears as a narrow column on the left-side of the page. Using PC laptop running Vista, FireFox 5.0 Some affected sites are Netflix, Accuweather, Morningstar.

Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.

"Clear the Cache":

  • Firefox > Preferences > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"

"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:

  • Firefox > Preferences > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"

Start Firefox in Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Cor-el: clearing the cache, cookies doesn't help. Will try Safe Mode. I strongly feel that it has to do with timing. It seems the page is horrible when it first comes up, then everything is fine after a refresh. The cable in this area seems slow and I have been thinking about testing my laptop to a different area. Thanks for your reply.

Cor-el: Need some help here. Firefox says hold down Option key to get to Safe Mode. There is no Option key on a PC. What do I do?

more options

On Windows you can hold down the Shift key and click the desktop shortcut to start in Safe Mode.

See "Help with:" in the column at the right side and choose to see the information for Windows.

cor-el: This is wonderful. Thank you so much for your help. Switched to safe mode, and problem vanished. Plus, the speed of pages loading increased greatly. For instance, since using Firefox, Netflix site was very slow when going page to page. In safe mode, pages come up in a second. What do I do now?

more options

If it does work in Safe-mode then disable all extensions and then try to find which is causing it by enabling one at a time until the problem reappears.

  • Use "Disable all add-ons" on the Safe mode start window to disable all extensions.
  • Close and restart Firefox after each change via "File > Exit" (Mac: "Firefox > Quit"; Linux: "File > Quit")
