Just downloaded latest version of Firefox but every site brings untrusted error using Firefox but same sites are ok using IE and Chrome

more options

I have Windows 7 Home on a laptop. I have just downloaded the latest version of Firefox (v25) and have Google as the default search engine. No matter what site I enter into Google I get the 'Untrusted' site message. I have typed in BBC, Firefox etc. The message is:

This Connection is Untrusted

You have asked Firefox to connect securely to www.google.com, but we can't confirm that your connection is secure.

My virus checker is Nortons.

I have read the support forum and my date and time are correct. I have IE and Chrome with Google as the default search engine and do not get the message when accessing BBC, Firefox etc.

This is the first time Firefox has been downloaded onto the laptop.

Please does anyone have any idea what is causing the problem.

Soluție aleasă

I did have BrowserSafe installed. As soon as I uninstalled it Firefox functioned correctly.

Thank you so much for the advice.

We need a little bit more information about the security certificate.

If you expand the third section of the page ("I understand the risks") and start the process of adding an exception by clicking the Add Exception button, then you can click the View button to see the details of the site's certificate.

In particular, who is listed as the issuer? Does it mention your security software provider (e.g., BitDefender or ESET) or some other third party other than Geotrust and Google Internet Authority? (I've attached what I see.)

You can cancel the Add Exception process after viewing the certificate.

also: what is the error code under "technical details" on the error page itself?

Hello Philipp

Thank you for your help.

The error code is as follows:

sec_error_unknown_issuer

I have also attached images of my certificate - clearly this is the problem. Where do I find a valid certificate?

Hello jscher200,

Thank you for your help as well. From the reply to Philipp you can see the problem with my certificate.

Do you use the Fiddler proxy to monitor your connections to the internet?

If not, do you have something called BrowserSafe installed? That software may use the certificate from Fiddler to intercept and decode your web traffic and you should uninstall it ASAP. Recent thread making that connection: Why won't Firefox let me access Google when it is in the tool bar anyway?

Thanks Phillip, that did the trick - so far. I need to re-install Firefox and see it it's completely gone. Man, if I knew where that program came from - I'd blast it to smitherines! I was having coniption fits for the last several days. I could have had a heart attack or stroke! And would Browser Safe**** be blamed? Nooooo. murderous B_____ds!

I had the browsersafeguard program on my drive for months (don't know how it got there) with no problem using older versions of FF. After I installed FF 27.0.1, I got the Untrusted Site error message whenever I attempted to make a secure connection. Uninstalling browsersafeguard cleared up the problem.

I have FF 28, no BrowserSafeGuard, Kasperski or Proxy. My Date/Time are also ok.

I get "untrusted connection" (from the beginning) when browsing to Google.com (have to "Add Exception" every time), no possibility to add Exception for Gmail (from the beginning), got problem with YouTube and FaceBook after upgrading to FF 28 with no possibility to add exception (sec_error_unknown_issuer).

As usual IE and Chrome work just fine with ALL sites. No reason to explain, that no one cares about the FF secure feature and its "importance" if it doesn't allow to use the product in the time the competitors just do it. Please, provide a complete FIX. Thank you.

Hi PilotPirx, who is the issuer of the certificate you added as an exception for Google?

You can view the certificate either while you're on a secure Google page, or in the Options dialog:

orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced > Certificates mini-tab > "View Certificates" button > Servers tab

Click a certificate and use the View button. Check the "Issued by" section. The kind of issuer you might find is:

  • Name associated with your security software, such as ESET, BitDefender, etc.
  • Sendori (indicates unwanted software from Sendori)
  • FiddlerRoot (indicates unwanted software named similarly to BrowserSafeguard, BrowserSafe, SafeGuard)
  • Something else

What do you see?
