firefox keeps opening offscreen. I used the move function to get it back onscreen but everytime i reboot it happens again. Is there some setting I can change?

I have 2 displays hooked up, a monitor and my TV(which is usually off). When I hover over the Firefox icon on the taskbar I can see Firefox and the tabs that are open but when I click on them, click restore or maximize nothing happens. i was able to get it back using the move command and somehow either using the arrow keys or moving my mouse I was able to drag the window onto a visible area of my monitor. Is there some setting I need to change so that I don't have to do this every time I reboot? I'm running Windows 8.1. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Firefox stores the last window position in a settings file that can occasionally become corrupted. You could try removing that file and see whether Firefox correctly identifies your primary monitor. Here's how:

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information

In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button to open a new window showing your currently active settings files.

Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit, either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
  • (menu bar) File > Exit

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename localstore.rdf to something like localstore.old

Start Firefox back up again. Is the window visible?

By the way, is this only a problem when you shut down Windows and start it up again, or any time you close down Firefox and restart it?

If the problem only occurs at startup, do you have a program named Advanced SystemCare? It apparently has a feature that can modify your Firefox settings files at Windows startup. This came up in another thread, but I'm not sure how to turn that feature off.

HI schu132, What display setting do you have set when the TV is off? I understand that when you click on minimized windows, restore them or maximize them nothing happens. When you hover over the icon on the task bar, do you right click on the preview tiles? If you left click, they come into focus, but right click give the options you are mentioning.

I am also trying to understand, you were trying to move the window to a place you can see it. Did it maximize on a screen that was on? If so it may be detecting the last monitor or is it a setting. The setting I am referring to is on Windows 8 > Control Panel > Appearance and Personalization > Display > Screen Resolution > Multiple displays -< what is selected here?
