A grey box with the notification "A plugin is needed to display this content" appears on every page that I view after the latest Firefox (35.0) update. This is forcing me to use an alternate browser.

@DOUGM500049 I see the problem. Okay, you need to install that missing plug-in. I will explain it as easy as I can, Firefox needs display plug-ins to run. You need to download that plugin, most likely there is a link to click to download the plug-in click that. Then download this plug-in and it should work, they are most likely asking to download silver light or adobe flash player, this is needed to display a lot of stuff. If there is no download button and/or this looks a little fishy then it could be a virus, clutching onto Firefox, I recommend running a virus scan on Firefox. I hope this works. Thanks for using Mozilla Support. If this doesn't work then please post a picture of what it looks like and tag me. If you don't know how to take a screen shot I recommend Gyazo.

When I start the Inspector and click on the grey box that contains the text "A plugin is needed to display this content" it highlights the following line: <embed width="400" height="300" type="application/comratings-npcomtracker-scriptable-plugin">/embed>

I don't know what to do from here. I believe this all started with the update to 35.0

There isn't coming up anything useful with a search for that content type, so this could be malware related.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer. Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.
