Issues with search engines and Adblock

more options

Regardless of which search engine, I look something up, go to the page I'm interested in, and if it's not useful, click 'back' to take me back to the list of relevant results on the search engine (Google, Bing, etc.). The page I'm currently on will not allow me to go back, instead refreshing its own page.

In addition, despite reinstalling Firefox and Adblock (plus or reg) and checking the relevant updates/software, etc., within the last few weeks I've been receiving ad 'boxes' (void of actual ads but taking up the space where they would typically be) on every page I visit.

I'm not happy, but I love Mozilla and want to continue to support you.

If you right-click or long-press the back button, you should get a full tab history that lets you skip backwards. But normally that is only necessary on maybe 1% of websites, so if you are getting trapped routinely, something else is definitely wrong.

In case one of your other extensions is involved, could you test the search results page in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to deactivate extensions and some advanced features of Firefox. More info: Diagnose Firefox issues using Troubleshoot Mode.

You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
  • Help menu > Restart with Add-ons Disabled

Not all add-ons are disabled: Flash and other plugins still run

After Firefox shuts down, a small dialog should appear. Click "Start in Safe Mode" (not Reset).

Any difference?
