Suddenly, Thunderbird has started removing e-mails as soon as they are read. Why? How can I get them to be retained again?

Cannot find an option that would force them to be deleted, nor one to forced them to be retained. They simply disappear after being read. They are NOT in the trash folder, nor the junk folder, not the archive folder. I can't find them anywhere. If I changed anything, it was inadvertent because I haven't touched any of the options since I set it up two years ago!

Make sure View-Threads is set to All and not Unread.

Not sure I understood the directions. It sounded like copying a file to a thumb drive and then copying it back.

I found a way to define another instance of my e-mail address, as a IMAP instead of a POP protocal. A lot of old messages came back, including the ones that dissappeared over the last few days.

Not a good solution, but I'll fool around with it next week when I have time. I might have to drop THunderbird and just go with the Google Mail Browser program.

You do not mention whether they could be found with a search.

Do we assume you did not check to see if you were only showing unread mail?

This is quite a common thing as it easy to accidentally click to show only unread mail.

If anyone else reads this, please check you are not only showing unread mail.

The Quick Filter has an option 'Show only unread mail'. The icon looks like a pair of sunglasses. click on that icon to toggle the filter back to showing all mail.

Also as Airmail said...please check 'View' > 'Threads' is set to All and not Unread.
