When I try to access Thunderbird I get a box saying 'would you like a new email address'. There is an option to skip this and use existing email, but when I use this I get another box saying 'mail account set up' to get a new account. When I fill in the set up questions it says 'Thunderbird failed to find the settings for your email account'. I want to use my gmail account in future, and want to access my address book in Thunderbird but I can't get any further with it.

looks to me like your anti virus or other security software is blocking thunderbird from accessing the internet. Thunderbird can find the setting for gmail. they are located here https://autoconfig.thunderbird.net/v1.1/gmail.com

As you are being advised that Thunderbird can not find them, it clearly is being blocked from reaching out to get them. The firewall component of Norton's in particular is very good at blocking Thunderbird from reaching out to the internet.
