Is the best way to return to using FF after trying Chrome a few months and import all the bookmarks, passwords, data & etc to a new profile?

more options

I did not delete FF I simply imported into Chrome all my FF data and tried Chrome. I prefer FF and want to add back into FF all the new passwords and bookmarks & etc that I created/added while using Chrome. Hence my question. And if yes, then shouldn't I totally avoid synching with my FF account as wouldn't that defeat the purpose of creating a new profile to avoid duplication?

BTW I tried creating a new profile and followed the only instructions I've found so far to import Bookmarks from Chrome. It left out all my tab info and more including only 1/2 of what I want to bring back.

Will I ever get an answer here? Mozillazine was so helpful.

In case the bookmarks were imported to their own "Imported from Chrome" folder on the Bookmarks Menu, you can try using the Library window (Ctrl+Shift+b) to reorganize (drag and drop bookmarks shown on the right to a different folder on the left).

Thank you for your attention!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I want to import everything, not just bookmarks. I guess I've failed to find that trick. Simply I tried what I could find hoping it would include everything but it did not. So I just want to know how to import everything to include all my tabs and preferences and etc.

Did you use the "Import from another browser" dialog?

Import data from another browser

That may or may not include current tabs, I can't recall that. If you don't see tabs as a category you can import, then probably would need to bookmark the tabs in Chrome before importing.

Given I have a lot of tabs, that seems like a lot of wasted time. There must be a better solution.

I already have all the tabs in an existing profile, but I've added a bunch of bookmarks, deleted some, and added passwords to Chrome. If I could import all that to my existing profile without ending up to duplicate bookmarks and etc, can I just import into my existing profile?

You could export from your new profile, if it has the proper bookmarks, and then import those into your old Firefox profile. Note that you have a choice between export/import and backup/restore. Here's the difference:

  • Import adds to your current set. This will cause duplicates.
  • Restore replaces your current set. This will avoid duplicates but only makes sense if you are sure you won't be losing anything.

I think in this case the best approach is:

(A) In your new profile, create a Backup (.json)

(B) In your old profile, create an Export (.html) file "just in case" and keep this around in your Documents folder for possible reference

(C) In your old profile, restore the Backup you created in the new profile

Success?

Note: On the about:profiles page, you can designate your old profile as the default again (using the Set as default profile button) so Firefox uses it at the next startup.

I've got to think over this big time and I've already consumed two glasses of wine. I'll work on it tomorrow. I'll hope you'll reappear if I need more guidance. Thank you for your attention and help! Good night!

I cannot FIND the supposed imported bookmarks from Chrome. I've tried numerous times to create a new profile then import both at the time of profile creation and after creation using the instructions at:

https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/import-bookmarks-google-chrome#firefox:win10:fx83

The last step where "from google chrome" should appear, it doesn't. I've poked around on everything I can find and zilch. Something is missing in the instructions.

Help, please!

I haven't tested this recently myself, so I can't tell you whether that article is up-to-date. The other option would be file-based export/import:

Bookmarks is not the only thing I want to import and Chrome was useless for the rest. I opened, for the first time, MS Edge and successfully imported everything from Chrome. Then I tried importing from Edge. Same failure. The FF instructions don't work.

Where did Mozillazine go? Is FF going the same direction?

Thanks for trying to help.

Hopefully someone with more experience using Chrome can assist you with the passwords.
