I am being plagued by having a blank area to the top of the firefox screen which cannot be clicked in, it obliterates menus, part of bookmarks and makes the window unavailable to minimise, it only happens on full sized windows. Currently on 93.0 64 bit Firefox Windows 10 PC. I've not added anything new into Firefox.

Is there a keyboard stroke to minimise the window to make it usable inorder that I can finish work on it? What's causing it and Is there a fix?

Start Firefox in Troubleshoot Mode to check if one of the extensions ("3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Extensions) or if hardware acceleration or userChrome.css is causing the problem.

  • switch to the DEFAULT theme: "3-bar" menu button or Tools -> Add-ons -> Themes
  • do NOT click the "Refresh Firefox" button on the Troubleshoot Mode start window

I've not added any new addons. It disppears with a complete reboot of the PC. But while that gets round the issue, it doesn't solve why it is happening.

I've tried Troubleshot mode and have yet to see it in that mode, but then again I haven't had the probelm re-occur today at all in normal mode either. That's why I'd rather get an understanding of what is causing it because I can't see a pattern to it but when it does happen there is no way out of it. Hence me asking if there is a keyboard stroke to minimise the window not full minimise to bar but just make the window not full screen, because I've never seen it happen in a not full screen windows. It has ony ever happened on a full screen window

It's possible a corrupt file was removed after what you did before. Let us know if the problem returns.

If it does, try using Troubleshoot mode to see if that helps.

It has happened again!! I noticed that this happened on my second screen and I am thinking it has always happened on the second screen. I can close the Window by hovering the mouse over the bottom bar and clicking X at top right hand corner of small window. Hwever I also notice that Right mouse click Shift which giives the option of Restore, Minimise worls but restores only restores the window with the blank part. I am now on Firefox 94.0.1

Any further thoughts welcome on how to resolve and stop this

and with Edge Browser

Boot the computer in Windows Safe mode with network support to see if that has effect in case security software is causing problems.

cor-el, tx. Given that yesterday showed this was not just a Firefox issue I contacted Windows support with the problem in place and they sent me a in place reinstall of windows which completed overnight (although that doesn't help with understanding what caused it). Will wait to see if the problem recurs or is fixed and let you know.
