OK. someone kindly offered me a new-to-me computer and claimed that they had transferred everything to the newish one. Well, what they did was take my umpteen gazillion desktop shortcuts and place them all in "bookmarks menu". EEK.` That's way too many. So I exported them to an html file/link/firefox internet shortcut on the desktop called "bookmarks.html". Worked swell. However, the bookmarks menu went along. It no longer appears under"bookmarks" on the menu bar. I was able to get it onto the toolbar. (star in tray). If I click on that, and then select "bookmarks sidebar", what appears in the sidebar is perfect. Just like new. But on the menu bar, on the dropdown menu under "bookmarks", no "bookmarks menu".

I can live with this BUT I really don't want to BECAUSE there are bizillion bookmarks in the bookmarks menu. I need to send them someplace (or gather them into a NEW folder, so that I can add newly created bookmarks and be all neat and organized.

How do I put the "bookmarks menu" that shows on the sidebar back under "bookmarks" ??? How do I get the bizillion bookmarks off of "bookmarks menu"? Is there a "select all", then "delete"? I don't want to lose the ones in the html folder on the desktop. I am happy with them being in an html folder on my desktop. Should I change the name of the html link to XYZ.html?

I just do not understand how the sidebar can look perfect but the menu bar doesn't.

Help, please !

Hi, in the Sidebar, there are three top level categories:

  • Bookmarks Toolbar => optional horizontal bar below the main Firefox toolbar
  • Bookmarks Menu => drop-down menu from the top menu bar or the button
  • Other Bookmarks => accessible as a fly-out folder on the Bookmarks Menu or a drop-down list on the Bookmarks Toolbar

(All bookmarks need to be under one of those categories, they can't be outside those categories.)

Where are your bookmarks now that you want to move to the drop-down Bookmarks Menu?

Regarding your desktop file, that is completely separate from what is displayed in Firefox.

Okay, now that I read the title of this thread again, it sounds like you have

Bookmarks Toolbar
Bookmarks Menu (stuff that should be on the drop-down menu)
Bookmarks Menu
(empty -- the above belongs here)
Other Bookmarks
  (not relevant at the moment)

If you call up the Library window using "Manage bookmarks" (Ctrl+Shift+O as in "Organizer") you should be able to move those items.

In the left column, expand Bookmarks Toolbar and click its Bookmarks menu folder. The contents should display in the right column.

Click any bookmark in the right column and then press Ctrl+A to select the entire list.

Drag the selected bookmarks to the "real" Bookmarks Menu in the left column and drop it there to transfer the bookmarks.

Success?

If something goes terribly wrong, there is a small menu bar in the Library window with Organize > Undo

AH, I was imprecise. The "bookmarks menu" is in the line above the toolbar, the line that has downloads, menu, etc icons. Which means that when I go the library, select manage, all that is under "bookmarks toolbar" is the very few very new bookmarks.

So under manage in the left column, I see under "all bookmarks" the 3 - >bookmarks toolbar (note >) which expands to show the few new bookmarks bookmarks menu (no >) which automatically shows the long list of old bookmarks other bookmarks (no >) empty folder.

So, I bravely tried to move a link from the right pane to the "other bookmarks folder". It simply disappeared. No sign of it in any bookmarks related folder. "Other" remains empty. So I used "Undo" and the link is back in the lengthy "bookmarks menu" .

I also cannot figure out how to IMPORT the html file from the desktop. I went to MANAGE, then selected IMPORT, then selected the file on the desktop. Now under "bookmarks menu" I have a "bookmarks toolbar" folder (an exact duplicate of the real one). I can delete it with no harm to the contents of the "real/original bookmarks toolbar".

Sigh.

I changed the name of the desktop html file to oldbookmarks.html, and then imported to (under library) "other", but what happened is that a folder called "bookmarks toolbar" (yup, a copy of that folder) appeared under "bookmarks menu and "other" remained empty.

I have also tried to refresh Firefox and to "verify". No effect.

I was only a Fortran user, never DOS, so I'm not fluent in DOS, but perhaps I can follow directions to go to DOS somehow and "fix" ?

Thanks much !

The bookmark import is additive: it adds the contents of the file to what you already have.

So right now, the long list that is under

All Bookmarks > Bookmarks Menu

is not where it is supposed to be? You want to move it somewhere else?

The ONLY place that "bookmarks menu" is located under "all bookmarks" along with "bookmarks toolbar" is in the sidebar view.

Otherwise it is on the bar above the toolbar (downloads, menu, print, ghostery..) and it does not appear at all in the "bookmarks" drop down menu. (file, edit, history etc.)

When I did "refresh firefox", there was of course no ghostery. But otherwise everything is as just described.

I want to move it from the bookmarks toolbar to the drop down menu under "bookmarks (filed, edit, history, etc line).

It appears as I want in sidebar view.

Thanks !

If the bookmarks are listed under Bookmarks Menu in the sidebar, they should also be listed on BOTH the main panel of Bookmarks Menu button drop-down AND the main panel of the classic Bookmarks menu. Please see the attached composite screenshot for reference.

It your classic menu is the odd man out, it makes me wonder whether your bookmark/history database has become corrupted in some way. Here is my general suggestion for that:

First, if you haven't already, please do a normal shutdown and/or restart of your system. Restarting Windows can help by freeing up locked files, completing any deferred updates, and resolving temporary file permission issues.

Next, if Firefox still has bookmark problems, could you let us know what you get when you run the "Verify Integrity" diagnosis and repair function. That's here:

Open Firefox's Troubleshooting Information page using any of these methods:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > More Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

Near the bottom, there is a section titled Places Database -- that's the file which stores history and bookmarks. Click the button labeled Verify Integrity. There may be a 10-15 second delay before results appear.

If all is well, the report that appears below the button should start with:

> Task: checkIntegrity
+ The places.sqlite database is sane
+ The favicons.sqlite database is sane
> Task: invalidateCaches
+ The caches have been invalidated
> Task: checkCoherence
+ The database is coherent

Does yours say that, or something else? You can select and copy the report, and then paste it into a reply for review and comment.

OK, not meaning to be rude, but to get to check/verify integrity, select troubleshootin from the Help dropdown and one goes straight to the desired page.

Before running the verify/check integrity, I shut down Firefox an then re-opened it.

Here's what was listed:

> Task: checkIntegrity + The places.sqlite database is sane + The favicons.sqlite database is sane > Task: invalidateCaches + The caches have been invalidated > Task: checkCoherence + The database is coherent > Task: expire + Database cleaned up > Task: originFrecencyStats + Recalculated origin frecency stats > Task: vacuum + Initial database size is 5120KiB + The database has been vacuumed + Final database size is 5120KiB > Task: stats + Places.sqlite size is 5120KiB + Favicons.sqlite size is 608KiB + pragma_user_version is 59 + pragma_page_size is 32768 + pragma_cache_size is -2048 + pragma_journal_mode is wal + pragma_synchronous is 1 + History can store a maximum of 112348 unique pages + Table moz_origins has 184 records + Table moz_places has 374 records + Table moz_historyvisits has 207 records + Table moz_inputhistory has 0 records + Table moz_bookmarks has 439 records + Table moz_bookmarks_deleted has 0 records + Table moz_keywords has 0 records + Table sqlite_sequence has 0 records + Table moz_anno_attributes has 0 records + Table moz_annos has 0 records + Table moz_items_annos has 0 records + Table moz_meta has 5 records + Table moz_places_metadata has 0 records + Table moz_places_metadata_search_queries has 0 records + Table moz_places_metadata_snapshots has 0 records + Table moz_places_metadata_snapshots_extra has 0 records + Table moz_places_metadata_snapshots_groups has 0 records + Table moz_places_metadata_groups_to_snapshots has 0 records + Table sqlite_stat1 has 17 records + Table moz_session_metadata has 0 records + Table moz_session_to_places has 0 records + Pages sequentiality: 92.3 + sqlite_schema: 32KiB (1.9%), 27.5% eff. + moz_origins: 32KiB (1.9%), 20.2% eff. + sqlite_autoindex_moz_origins_1: 32KiB (1.9%), 19% eff. + moz_historyvisits: 32KiB (1.9%), 14.4% eff. + moz_inputhistory: 32KiB (1.9%), 0% eff. + sqlite_autoindex_moz_inputhistory_1: 32KiB (1.9%), 0% eff. + moz_bookmarks_deleted: 32KiB (1.9%), 0% eff. + sqlite_autoindex_moz_bookmarks_deleted_1: 32KiB (1.9%), 0% eff. + moz_keywords: 32KiB (1.9%), 0% eff. + sqlite_autoindex_moz_keywords_1: 32KiB (1.9%), 0% eff. + sqlite_sequence: 32KiB (1.9%), 0% eff. + moz_anno_attributes: 32KiB (1.9%), 0% eff. + sqlite_autoindex_moz_anno_attributes_1: 32KiB (1.9%), 0% eff. + moz_annos: 32KiB (1.9%), 0% eff. + moz_items_annos: 32KiB (1.9%), 0% eff. + moz_meta: 32KiB (1.9%), 1% eff. + moz_places_metadata: 32KiB (1.9%), 0% eff. + moz_places_metadata_search_queries: 32KiB (1.9%), 0% eff. + sqlite_autoindex_moz_places_metadata_search_queries_1: 32KiB (1.9%), 0% eff. + moz_places_metadata_snapshots: 32KiB (1.9%), 0% eff. + moz_places_metadata_snapshots_extra: 32KiB (1.9%), 0% eff. + moz_places_metadata_snapshots_groups: 32KiB (1.9%), 0% eff. + moz_places_metadata_groups_to_snapshots: 32KiB (1.9%), 0% eff. + sqlite_stat1: 32KiB (1.9%), 2.8% eff. + moz_session_metadata: 32KiB (1.9%), 0% eff. + sqlite_autoindex_moz_session_metadata_1: 32KiB (1.9%), 0% eff. + moz_session_to_places: 32KiB (1.9%), 0% eff. + moz_places_url_hashindex: 32KiB (1.9%), 15.6% eff. + moz_places_hostindex: 32KiB (1.9%), 29.6% eff. + moz_places_visitcount: 32KiB (1.9%), 8.9% eff. + moz_places_frecencyindex: 32KiB (1.9%), 10.7% eff. + moz_places_lastvisitdateindex: 32KiB (1.9%), 12.5% eff. + moz_places_guid_uniqueindex: 32KiB (1.9%), 22.5% eff. + moz_places_originidindex: 32KiB (1.9%), 10.5% eff. + moz_historyvisits_placedateindex: 32KiB (1.9%), 11.6% eff. + moz_historyvisits_fromindex: 32KiB (1.9%), 5.3% eff. + moz_historyvisits_dateindex: 32KiB (1.9%), 9.7% eff. + moz_bookmarks_itemindex: 32KiB (1.9%), 13.7% eff. + moz_bookmarks_parentindex: 32KiB (1.9%), 15.2% eff. + moz_bookmarks_itemlastmodifiedindex: 32KiB (1.9%), 24.4% eff. + moz_bookmarks_dateaddedindex: 32KiB (1.9%), 21.1% eff. + moz_bookmarks_guid_uniqueindex: 32KiB (1.9%), 26.4% eff. + moz_keywords_placepostdata_uniqueindex: 32KiB (1.9%), 0% eff. + moz_annos_placeattributeindex: 32KiB (1.9%), 0% eff. + moz_items_annos_itemattributeindex: 32KiB (1.9%), 0% eff. + moz_places_metadata_placecreated_uniqueindex: 32KiB (1.9%), 0% eff. + moz_bookmarks: 96KiB (5.7%), 49.8% eff. + moz_places: 128KiB (7.5%), 58.4% eff. > Task: _refreshUI

That report looks good. You should be able to move bookmarks.

more options

How would I do that?

more options

One method was the drag-and-drop. Since that wasn't working for you, another method is cut and paste. Here's how:

In the Library window / Manage bookmarks:

(A) Click the folder in the left column that currently has the bookmarks

Select some bookmarks (you can multi-select a range by single-clicking the first one and then Shift+clicking the last one) and then right-click > Cut

(B) Click the folder in the left column that you want to move the bookmarks to

Right-click a blank area of the right column > Paste

You should see the bookmarks get added here after a brief delay. When you return to the other folder, you should see that those bookmarks have been removed from there.

WHAT ?? The problem is that on the firefox home page (or whatever I designated as homepage) THER IS NO BOOKMARKS MENU in the drop down "Bookmarks", . It appears ont he toolbar. It appears on the sidebar. It does not appear on the main page unbder bookmarks.

more options

Do these match or do these not match on yours:

more options

DO NOT MATCH.

My sidebar is perfect.

The dropdown "bookmarks" (between history and tools)does not have "bookmarks menu" in the dropdown list. Just "bookmarks toolbar" and "other".

On the bookmarks toolbar, there is a folder (exactly like other folders with bookmarks in them) called "bookmarks menu" which has all its bookmarks.

I want that folder to return to its proper location - the "bookmarks" dropdown men.

more options

So in your sidebar, you have:

Bookmarks Toolbar
Bookmarks Menu (sub-folder -- this stuff that should be on the drop-down menu)
Bookmarks Menu
(empty -- the above belongs here)
Other Bookmarks
  (not relevant at the moment)

If you call up the Library window using "Manage bookmarks" (Ctrl+Shift+O as in "Organizer") you should be able to move the items that are in the nested/embedded Bookmarks Menu folder to the actual Bookmarks Menu folder. To be safe, let's copy/paste first.

In the left column, expand Bookmarks Toolbar and click its Bookmarks menu subfolder. The contents should display in the right column.

Click any bookmark in the right column and then press Ctrl+A to select the entire list.

Right-click > Copy

In the left column, click the real Bookmarks Menu folder. On the right side, right-click in the blank area and click Paste.

After that, do the pasted bookmarks show up on the real menu when you check in the main window?

more options

well, when I started the computer this morning, there is now NO bookmarks men folder on the taskbar.

on the sidebar menu, everything looks perfect.

looking at the bookmarks dropdown (between history and tools) it shows Manage bookmarks Bookmark current tab Bookmarks toolbar> (new bookmarks placed in it. NO bookmarks menu folder) Other bookmarks > empty>

When I select "manage bookmarks", I get: All bookmarks

  bookmarks toolbar (accurate)
bookmarks menu (perfectly filled with the links)
  other (empty

So now the only location of the bookmarks menu folder is in the sidebar and under manage. The "bookmarks menu" folder has left the toolbar. It has not returned to the menu under bookmarks.

It's different <G>....

more options

Hmm, the bookmarks showing under Bookmarks Menu in the sidebar ALSO should be on the Bookmarks menu that drops down from the top menu bar. But below Other Bookmarks and the separator, yours is blank??

more options

On the dropdown menu (between history and tools) I see:

Manage bookmarks _____ Bookmark current tab ____ Bookmarks toolbar Other bookmarks

more options

The rest of your Bookmarks Menu bookmarks definitely should follow below Other Bookmarks, as pictured in my earlier screenshot:

If they are missing only from the menu between History and Tools, and everything is okay with Verify Integrity, I don't know what could cause that.

more options

OK, thanks for your suggestions.

<G> I give up !
