Won't change the ability to restore through the History menu, but I think your objection is just the notice that your last session terminated and is available from the default homepage of about:home

All you have to do is use your own home page, which would include

  • about:blank is an empty page
  • http://www.google.com is a google search page
  • any page you want for your home page.

I also have this problem. Lately Firefox always begins with the window prompting to restore session. The checked pages it displays are always the same ones from a few weeks ago. I've tried a number of solutions including resetting my homepage, resetting preferences, reinstalling the program, and deleting cache.

I appreciate everyone who contributes. I'll keep looking for the appropriate solution.

You can set the pref browser.sessionstore.privacy_level to 2 (never) or 1 (non-HTTPS, default in Firefox 3 versions) on the about:config page to disable saving cookies via session restore.

To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the "Enter" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.

  • Use the Filter bar at to top of the about:config page to locate a preference more easily.
  • Preferences that have been modified show as bold(user set).
  • Preferences can be reset to the default or changed via the right-click context menu.

Yours appears to be a different problem then the original poster. You could have read-only settings on some of your profile such as restoring form a CD-ROM so that your current session never gets saved.

  1. Bring up your profile by typing about:support into the location bar.
  2. Click on the "Open Containing Folder", which is your profile. Leave that up, and
  3. Exit Firefox using the File menu or Firefox button then Exit (not with the "X" in upper right corner which just closes the window.
  4. Delete sessionstore.js after noting the date on it, and if you have any of the same with numbers attached delete them as well.

Next make sure you don't have read-only files in your profile, with Firefox still down.

  1. use Ctrl+A to select all files and folders in your profile
  2. Note the name of your current profile
  3. Go up one directory, and right-click on folder that is your current profile
  4. Clear the read-only box and then click on "Apply"
  5. Accept "unset" for folder, subfolders and files.

Restart Firefox. You should be good. If you didn't mess with your other settings you should be able to restore your previous session when do really need to restore the previous session. Which you can to from the History menu (also available through the Firefox button). As with the original poster if you assign your own page you won't get current about:home page.

You might also check that you have the choice you want in Tools > Options > General -- When Firefox starts: "Start with my home page" is the most common choice on the first drop-down.
