I have updated my Adobe Acrobat plugin three times today but the firefox plugin check says it is out of date, a problem as I repeatedly encounter "The Adobe Acrobat plugin has crashed" when I attempt to download pdfs.

I am attempting to download pdf's from a library search on JSTOR. I can view the pdf but cannot download them as they say "The Adobe Acrobat plugin has crashed". I have been to the firefox plugin check and have updated Adobe Acrobat three times in the last hour, but it still says my plugin is not up to date. This leads me to believe that this may be the source of my crash errors.

I updated Adobe Flash from the same firefox plugin check page and after one try it now says I am up to date, so my system is obviously accepting these updates.

You have multiple Adobe PDF Plugins installed, and that might be causing your crashing problem. Remove the older version of Adobe through the Windows Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs.

I checked the control panel and as far as I can tell I only have a single plugin installed, although it is hard to tell as none of them actually calls itself a plugin. What I believe is the newly installed plugin is called Adobe Reader X (10.1.0). I also have Adobe Acrobat 9 standard listed, but I thought Acrobat and Reader were different programs. Anyone?

Adobe Acrobat Reader is now widely known as Adobe Reader. You need to Uninstall Adobe Acrobat 9.

go to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs

Check and tell if its working.

I am having the same problem. I have tried multiple Firefox solutions in resetting downloads (uncorrupted), etc. I also dropped all my Adobe products and re-downloaded them. I can also download pdfs from sites other than jstor.org. What do you think I should do?

Maybe the problem is only on the jstor.org website.

Start Firefox in Safe Mode

Check and tell if its working while you are using Firefox Safe Mode.

The following solution is useful for people who have the full version of Acrobat 9, but are getting the error message "the Adobe Acrobat plugin has crashed". You probably want the features in the full version of Acrobat, but still need to be able to open PDF files from your Firefox browser.

Go to Tools > Options > Applications. Scroll down and change all of the Adobe Acrobat files to open with Acrobat 9 (or whatever version you have) instead of "Use Adobe Acrobat (in Firefox)". This may not be as handy as having it use Acrobat inside the Firefox browser, but it will still let you open PDF files without having to uninstall the full version of Acrobat. Hope this helps.

Looks like the solution is delete Acrobat 9 (or update to Acrobat 10) to prevent crashes between V 9 and Reader 10. However, my company won't let me upgrade to V10 for Acrobat. Therefore deleting Acrobat is not an option. Can I get (and use) Acrobat Reader 9 and resolve crashing issue?

Sorry, forgot to add that I did go to Options/Applications and use Reader as the default program... issue still exists.

Please start your own thread, so the forum software can show us your More system details. The "Owner" of this thread had multiple Adobe Reader plugins for Firefox - maybe that's your problem too?

I have the same issue as well and here is how I made mine works: Situation: I have adobe acrabat 9 and adobe reader 10 installaed on my windows xp Firefox crash whenever trying to open pdf file Action: firefox -> tools -> addon -> plugins disable adobe acrabat plugin Tried open pdf with firefox again, it ask which program to use (choose adobe reader instead, you might need browse from program -> adobe to find the exe file) Result: Works fine on my computer and I check the do not show this again

Appreciate input from zhangbob428, and his recommendation does allow me to open PDFs in a separate Adobe window. However, this crash within Firefox is unacceptable. Firefox needs to fix the plugin to allow Adobe Reader X Version 10.1.2 to work within Firefox 9.0.1. I have subscribed to this thread and I'm waiting for authoritative feedback from Firefox once the problem is fixed.

Thanks mha007. Did everything you recommend and PDFs open and then crash. I'm back to solution recommended by zhangbob428, which is not really acceptable. Still waiting for Mozilla to provide authoritative solution.

Adobe needs to fix their software, whether the problem is with their plugin for Firefox or the Reader program. Mozilla isn't going to fix software made by a 3rd party, which might not even be legal to do.

Using Firefox 10.0 and Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro 9.4.0. After reading some help pages on the Adobe site that said to repair the Adobe Reader X installation, I decided to remove Adobe Reader X completely as I also have Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro.

This worked and the PDFs are now opening in Firefox! Settings are as follows:

Add-ons Manager: Adobe Acrobat 9.4.0.195 - enabled

Tools>>Options>>Applications: Adobe Acrobat Document - "Use Adobe Acrobat (in Firefox)"
