When firefox starts, an "XvidSetup.exe" window pops up asking to install the file. How can I stop this?

This only happens opening FF, IE is ok. This started just a few days ago, but I cannot think of anything that triggered it.

I am running Windows XP.

Hi MSchp,

You should check to see what your homepage has been set to or try to NOT restore the previous session. Did you try to install the xvid codec at one point? It sounds like it might be trying to load it on startup because the download url might be stored in the session history or as your homepage. Try resetting the home page to default and don't load the previous session.

Hopefully this helps!

Matt, FF is set to open to a blank page.

After your suggestion, I noticed that the pop up window appeared to coincide with a single "myyahoo" pinned tab loading cycle. After unpinning and closing the tab, the pop up no longer appears!

I never intentionally requested an xvid download. While xvid seems to be a legitimate app, the fivemillionfriends / xvid download has some history of virus problems.

Thanks for your help,

Marvin

Do a malware check with some malware scan programs. You need to scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of the database before doing a scan.
