Server not found
Problem: All tabs/websites return a "Server not found" error message. History: I updated Ubuntu today 8-10-12 to 10.04.4 LTS kernel 2.6.32-42. I assume that an update of Firefox came with the Ubuntu update. Troubleshooting Information says that I am using Firefox version 14.0.1. The desktop with the updated Ubuntu is connected to a DSL modem which in turn is connected to the phoneline in. There are no filters, no other computers, no routers, and no phone connected to this line. When I disconnected the desktop from the modem and connected the laptop in its place, internet access was okay. The laptop runs older versions of Ubuntu and Firefox. This means that the problem is not in the line or the modem or the ISP. I am posting this question using the laptop, so any system information retrieved automatically is about the wrong computer, operating system, and version of Firefox. I copied the correct information from the malfunctioning desktop to the Troubleshooting Information box below. I tried all of the Help suggestions that I could find during three hours of attempts to solve this problem, but they all blame a firewall that I can't find in Ubuntu. Thanks for any help!

Please try the Reset Firefox feature via Help (Alt + H) > Troubleshooting Information.
(To revert to the previous profile you were using, close the new profile (i.e. exit Firefox), start Firefox and choose the Default User profile. While the Profile Manager is open, you can also delete the newly reset profile (the one containing random numbers), or the former profile, as the case may be). If the reset is okay, it would be a good idea to delete the old profile as otherwise it would be left intact with the previous data/cache until deleted.
Does the PC have internet connectivity?? You can try to telnet to a site in addition to host and ping check. The Ubuntu forum would also be helpful.

Thanks, dumdidadida. With some chagrin, I admit that the solution hit me a few minutes ago, at 2:45 am, four hours after I posted the question. Earlier today, after the update but before I tried to get on the internet, I accidentally hit the "sleep" button on the keyboard. That button puts the desktop into a sleep state with a blinking "on" light, but the desktop can be awakened only by a hard turn off. When I turn it back on, networking is disabled and has to be restored by right-clicking the networking icon and checking the "Enable Networking" line. It's that simple, I've done it before, and I just forgot about it this time. How embarrassing!!
