How can I stop repeating message "Sync encounteted an error"?

In recent days my two synced computers running Firefox ESR Macintosh 24.7.0 refuse to sync, putting up ""Sync encountered an error while syncing: Unknown error. Sync will automatically retry this action"".

I have read posts date to this month where Mozilla says the problem is with the sync servers and will be fixed. I need to know if that problem has been resolved: I continue to be unable to sync.

If it were up to me, I'd replace my current bookmarks with a .json file from a week or so ago, since I suspect bookmark file damage, but I don't know how to do this.

At any rate, having become dependent on sync I need to get the error messages to go away.

hello Etnier, when you type about:sync-log into the address bar and open the latest one or two error logs, can you copy their contents and put them into http://pastebin.mozilla.org/ or a similar service and paste a link here on the forum? this would be very helpful in assessing the problem. thank you!

Thanks-

Could also use help with those .json files for future reference, thanks.

hello, the process is failing while trying to sync your passwords.

would you be able to update those devices to firefox 31 ESR and switch to the new sync afterwards?: Sync your Firefox bookmarks, history, passwords and more

I have tried Firefox 30 and 31 and didn't like them, that's why I am using Firefox ESR Macintosh 24.7.0. Sync support has been withdrawn for older versions?

nothing has been announced in this regard as of yet, but in the foreseeable future i think you should probably anticipate that (since the old firefox versions it runs with will become unsupported soon).
also if it was a bug in the old sync system that is causing the error for you, it's rather unlikely that this will still be fixed...

For the time being why not disable Passwords from Sync, and see what happens.

I would be surprised if the older version of Sync was disabled before Oct 14th when Firefox 33 and ESR 31.2.0 are released. That is when support for ESR 24.9.0 will end.

Thanks for this information. It's a shame: Firefox started to lose me with its stubborn lack of support for IOS and really lost me with the new 'look' in recent versions. I started using ESR just to avoid being constantly, constantly nagged to 'upgrade'.

I've been with Mozilla since forever (Netscape>Camino>Firefox). Guess I'll have to find something else now, and I haven't really been able to find a good replacement.

And no: I don't view my problem as 'solved'.
