My Linux distro came with Firefox ESR and language packs pre-installed (Also Thunderbird and language packs). There are two package entries in the software manager for each of these applications: the main program and the language packs, which indicates that all languages in the language packs are installed/removed as one unit. The online description says the language packs are used for "additional languages". It doesn't say what the "standard" language(s) is/are or whether all languages require some language pack. I use English. Before uninstalling the language packs for both products, I want to confirm that they are not needed for English. Thanks.

Thanks.

Regarding the update, that is the subject of a different post. I do keep getting notices of the update but the update process doesn't work (the online check says my 24.4 version is the latest one and doesn't perform an automated update. If I just click on the update notice, the "connecting" message goes on forever without completing the connection to the update server. I understand that there is a method to manually install it, but it involves too many steps that I'm not familiar with.

Yes, you do not need the extra language packs. Also note that all languages are available as separate installers, so you would only need language packs if you want to install more than one language and want to switch between them.

Note that your Firefox 24.4.0 ESR version is outdated and compares to 28.0 and that the current release is 24.8.1 that has the same security patches as the current 32.0.3 release.
