Hi,

My firefox browser seems unable to connect to the internet. It tells me the proxy server is refusing connection. I found your page on web pages not loading, the section on proxy server settings, followed the instructions and yet nothing has changed. I tried uninstalling then reinstalling firefox and this has not helped either. Internet explorer seems to function (as much as internet explorer ever did) so I don't think it's a problem with my internet. I can also use the wifi via my phone.

Please help as I really don't want to switch to another browser.

Yours

Sam

Hi Sam,

It might be that there's a problem with your Firefox proxy settings. Resetting them to use the system defaults should help.

  1. In Firefox, click the menu New Fx Menu button and click Options
  2. Go to the Advanced section and then Network
  3. Where it says "Configure how Firefox connects to the internet, click Settings
  4. Make sure the Use system proxy settings open is selected and click OK
  5. Try opening another website in Firefox.

Let us know if this solves the issue!

While I did make the proxy error message go away I still cannot open web pages.

I am now getting this message:

"Unable to connect

Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at en-gb.facebook.com.

The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few moments.
If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network connection.
If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure that Firefox is permitted to access the Web."

Again this is for all pages and other browsers can connect

Did you check the connection settings in Firefox?

What is the current setting?

If you do not need to use a proxy to connect to internet then try to select "No Proxy" if "Use the system proxy settings" or one of the others do not work properly.

See "Firefox connection settings":

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test.

Do a malware check with several malware scanning programs on the Windows computer. Please scan with all programs because each program detects different malware. All these programs have free versions.

Make sure that you update each program to get the latest version of their databases before doing a scan.

You can also do a check for a rootkit infection with TDSSKiller.
