version 37.0.2: Google (anything) won't load using Firefox; fine on Chrome - anybody know the problem?

more options

With hesitation, I updated to Firefox version 37.0.2. Now, anytime I use any Google product (search, email, etc.), it will not load! All other search engines work fine and have no problem with Google using Chrome. Can someone please help? The only fix I can think of is to revert back to earlier Firefox version (computer neophyte here). Thanks!

Oh! I forgot to say: ONLY my school email will load (my school moved over to Gmail), but it takes a LONG time (minutes)... when it finally does load, the 'show more' function when you hover the mouse over the sender's name in Inbox, Privacy, Social (etc) tabs, NOTHING happens - I can no longer see if sender is really the sender by seeing the whole email address.... this is frustrating. Again, Gmail in Chrome works fine - hovering mouse over sender's name in any email tab expands to show more info.

Thanks!

Bump - PLEASE help! The problem continues.... thanks much, :) FYI: Javascript IS disabled (has been for a LONG time) and have run Kaspersky full scan and Malwarebytes scan - both detected "no threats".... the proxy setting is currently set to "use system proxy settings" and I am afraid to change that and lastly, "clear history" is greyed out.. not an option to choose, probably because I have a box checked to clear history every time Firefox closes. That's all I know, :) Thanks!

Hi, please try clearing the cache - How to clear the Firefox cache.

Also remove any Google cookies: Open Options (cog wheel) - in the 3-bar menu unless you've moved it, > Privacy tab > Show Cookies, then scroll through and remove all Google related cookies.

If that doesn't do it Try Firefox Safe Mode to see if the problem goes away. Firefox Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode that temporarily turns off hardware acceleration, resets some settings, and disables add-ons (extensions and themes).

If Firefox is open, you can restart in Firefox Safe Mode from the Help menu:

  • Click the menu button New Fx Menu, click Help Help-29 and select Restart with Add-ons Disabled.

If Firefox is not running, you can start Firefox in Safe Mode as follows:

  • On Windows: Hold the Shift key when you open the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
  • On Mac: Hold the option key while starting Firefox.
  • On Linux: Quit Firefox, go to your Terminal and run firefox -safe-mode
(you may need to specify the Firefox installation path e.g. /usr/lib/firefox)

When the Firefox Safe Mode window appears, select "Start in Safe Mode".

SafeMode-Fx35

If the issue is not present in Firefox Safe Mode, your problem is probably caused by an extension, theme, or hardware acceleration. Please follow the steps in the Troubleshoot extensions, themes and hardware acceleration issues to solve common Firefox problems article to find the cause.

To exit Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before opening Firefox for normal use again.

When you figure out what's causing your issues, please let us know. It might help others with the same problem.

Hi again! Wowzer - does Firefox fly in Safe mode! Lickety-split fast!

All things Google seem to work fine in safe mode, although..... the very FIRST time I tried to open my email (gmail via university mail service link (drop down selections)), Firefox said "can't connect to server"

So, I clicked on "Try again" tab and up came my email (with a 'warning' banner that says something like 'do you want to allow Firefox to continue on to page... but I never have to click "allow" because I guess the school server (?) forces Gmail to come up on it's own (since the upgrade to 32.0.2).....takes a while, but it loads.

I don't know why this banner thing keeps coming up on sites - I never had it happen before I upgraded to FF 32.0.2! Also, I have every update set to 'manual choice' (no automatic upgrading)

I have third party cookies to "Never", and there were NO cookies at all in the Privacy tab. The cache was empty to begin with, but clicked on 'clear' anyway, :)

So... I will go read "troubleshoot extensions" etc... even though the ONLY thing I did was update to newer version of FF. I have no idea what extensions, themes or hardware acceleration even ARE, lol.

Seems reasonable to me to think the upgraded version is the problem, since that is the ONLY change I have made to the computer in months and months ... (long time).

Thanks for reading this - will let you know if I fix the problem with your help/info!

Dear Susan, I didn't have the exact same problem as you but very similar. After updating Firefox, I use Google Gmail, I couldn't go to my Google voice account. I've solved the problem. Here's what I did. !. With your Firefox Browser open enter ur Gmail account. 2. Go to ur open menu in the tool bar at the right and click on it. 3. Then click the question mark at the bottom of the page, 4. Click on "Restart with Add-ons Disabled. 5. Then click restart. 6. All ur tabs should be the same, but u might have to sign in again. 7. C if this clears up ur problem. If it does then close the browser, this will start the browser again in normal mode. 8. Disable Add-ons one at a time until u figure out the one causing the problem. For me is was the Blur Add-on from Abine. Firefox Add-ons can sometimes cause problems with loading certain scripts onto web pages. It may allow some in or none, just depends. Google or Gmail has a lot of problems with FireFox Add-ons because many times it opens up a new page and the Add-on blocks certain script for that page. Or a particular Add-on can block script on the page ur on affecting items on that page from working properly. Give it a try. Very frustrating I Know. Good Luck. Hope this helps! KapaMan.

Is it this setting maybe?

"3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Options > Advanced

On the "General" mini-tab, uncheck the box for "Warn me when websites try to redirect or reload the page"
