How to disable the built-in mp3 player

When clicking on a link to an mp3 file, Firefox 44.0 opens the file in its own media player. I've indicated in Prefs->Applications that I want everything media related (including mp3 files) to open in VLC. However, that is ignored. That's unfortunate, however the real tragedy is that this built-in media player does not work when Flashblock is enabled.

When looking up previous solutions, none of them work any more.

Does anyone have any ideas for a new about:config key to fiddle with? Presently it's kind of a sad situation. I can't disable (or override) the built-in mp3 player but it is incompatible with Flashblock.

You can try to disable GStreamer and set this pref to false on the about:config page.

  • media.gstreamer.enabled = false
