I want to require a double-click to open messages in Thunderbird, I do not want messages to open with single click. Single click should only select messages not open them.

Thanks, I always disable the message pane in my email programs so nothing opens automatically, only when I click on them. After I posted the question, I restarted Thunderbird and it's back to double-click to open, single click to select, the way it always worked previously. I have no idea why it had changed, computer gremlins I guess.

When you do double-click a message, are you satisfied with its presentation? If so, I suggest you disable the Message Pane.

Untick View|Layout|Message Pane.
