Changing a tag makes the same change to ALL bookmarks in the folder. Also, tage in Properties do not mirror tags in Show All Bookmarks

I can no longer change the tag for an individual bookmark. If I add or delete a tag to any bookmark, that tag is added/deleted to every bookmark within the same folder. . For example, if I have 20 bookmarks in a folder, none of which have a tag, and I add a tag to any one of them, all 20 bookmarks will adopt that tag. If All 20 have a tag and I delete it from any one of them, the tag will be deleted from all 20. . I normally make changes using Show All Bookmarks. I went to the Bookmarks Toolbar and opened a bookmark's Properties.to see if changing a tag there would result in the same problem. It did not BUT the tags shown in the Properties dialog did not mirror those shown in Show All Bookmarks. Properties showed some tags that did not show up in Show All and Show All showed tags that did not show up in Properties. . I have stopped using tags for now as I have no idea which bookmarks actually have a tag or if tags they do have are accurate.

I've never used Sync and never will. I used Verify Integrity and I deleted places.sqlite. I also restarted Firefox in Safe Mode. Everything is still the same. Tags are not a high priority for me so I'm just going to abandon them since Firefox works fine otherwise and I don't want to start rebuilding everything. Unless somebody else replies with the same problem, there's no need to pursue this further. Thanks for the tips though. They may come in handy.

If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync temporarily during troubleshooting.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite database (bookmarks and history) in the Firefox profile folder.

  • use "Verify Integrity" on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page

See also:

If "Verify Integrity" on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page cannot repair places.sqlite then remove all places.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from a recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.
