With Windows 10 version 2004 and Thunderbird 78.4, I've turned off sounds in Tools/Options/General and in Control Panel/Sounds. Still I get a sound playing with new emails (perhaps not all, but I'm not sure). My email providers are gmail and verizon. What could be causing this?

Right-click the W10 Start button, Task Manager, more details, select the Startup tab and see if one of the apps could be making the sounds.

Do you have the accounts in the W10 Mail app? It can issue notifications when the app isn't open.

Sorry, I don't understand the question. Can you give more detail? Thanks.

Click the Start button, open Mail app. Are either of the verizon or gmail accounts set up in Mail?

more options

No, only Outlook is listed under accounts. I've never used Outlook.

Does the Outlook account in Mail receive messages? Is a sound enabled in Settings/Notifications?

more options

Outlook does not receive messages. Settings/Notifications is Off. Control Panel/Sounds is set to No sounds.

After more analysis and experimentation, the unwanted sounds seem not to be coming from mail arrival. I can set Thunderbird's mail arrival sound to something else, and the unwanted sound still comes.

The app was an automatic screen shot taker that I didn't think was on. Sometimes it seemed to be coordinated with new email. Thank you again.
