I use Firefox as default browser and cannot install Chrome. Downloaded Chrome and tried to install but I get 404 error message saying selected URL cannot be located on this server. I have cleared cache and cookies, didn't help.

Do you get the error message

  • when downloading, before the file is successfully saved
  • while running the installer from disk, before it completes successfully
  • the first time Chrome starts up after installation

Also, where are you downloading Chrome from? I'm pretty sure Google would not make its installer dependent on Firefox in any way...

I ran into the problem after downloading the file and clicking on "Install." I have Firefox as my browser. I don't recall whether I downloaded Chrome by through my Google/Gmail account or whether I just Googled "Chrome" and downloaded from google.com.

Your security/firewall software might be blocking the Chrome installer from contacting Google's servers. If you cannot find the setting, I suggest asking on Google's forums:

If you are installing Chrome in a business environment, you might also check with your IT on whether they have blocked it.
