Does Thunderbird support protocols for receiving mail that aren't pop or imap?

Can I import messages via the command line?

I am aware of exactly two mail protocols that are not proprietary. IMAP and POP. There is an add-on for Exchange server that is offered in the account setup process is the server is detected to be exchange. But really I don;t understand your question. What are you trying to do might be a better way to approach this.
