There is a clicktripz.com window that has started opening whenever Firefox is started. It is not a tab, it is a pop-behind window which is now popping in front.

Looks like this is a virus. Web search: https://www.bing.com/search?q=remove+clicktripz.com

You may have ad/mal-ware. Further information can be found in this article; https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/troubleshoot-firefox-issues-caused-malware?cache=no

Run most or all of the listed free to use malware scanners. Each works differently. If one program misses something, another may pick it up.

Hi Tommyboy, there are four possibilities, I think:

(1) The URL of that window has been added to your Firefox shortcut. This is a common malware trick. I'll give the steps to check your shortcut below the line.

(2) Your home page, or another page that loads at startup, contains a script to launch the extra window. If you need to check/change your home page, see: How to set the home page.

(3) An add-on launches that window. As a test, you can restart Firefox in its Safe Mode. I'll give the steps below the line.

(4) Firefox keeps restoring an old session containing that window. This is a rare problem, but sometimes Firefox doesn't save the latest session history correctly, or cleanup software removes the latest session history, so at startup Firefox think it needs to do a crash recovery with an older session history file. I'll give sugestions for diagnosing this below the line.

There likely are other scenarios, but those are the ones I suggest checking first.

For #1:

The first step is to open the shortcut properties as follows:

  • Desktop shortcut: right-click the icon, choose Properties
  • Pinned taskbar icon: right-click the icon, right-click Mozilla Firefox, choose Properties

Windows normally will select the Shortcut tab. If not, go ahead and click the Shortcut tab.

You'll see the Target highlighted. On Windows, that usually is no more and no less than one of the following:

"C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe"

If anything follows after that (for example, "http://example.com"), try clearing it out.

After OK'ing the Properties dialog, you can test right away to confirm that the Firefox shortcut now launches only your desired home page. Either:

  • double-click desktop shortcut
  • right-click pinned taskbar icon, click Mozilla Firefox

Any improvement?

For #3:

In Firefox's Safe/Troubleshoot Mode, it temporarily deactivates extensions, hardware acceleration, any userChrome.css/userContent.css files, and some other advanced features to help you assess whether these are causing the problem.

If Firefox is running:

You can restart Firefox in Safe/Troubleshoot Mode using either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > Help > Troubleshoot Mode... (before Fx88: Restart with Add-ons Disabled)
  • (menu bar) Help menu > Troubleshoot Mode... (before Fx88: Restart with Add-ons Disabled)

and OK the restart. A small dialog should appear. Click the Open button (before Fx88: "Start in Safe Mode" button).

If Firefox is not running:

Hold down the Shift key when starting Firefox. (On Mac, hold down the option/alt key instead of the Shift key.) A small dialog should appear. Click the Open button (before Fx88: "Start in Safe Mode" button).

Note: Don't use the Refresh without first reviewing this article to understand what will be deleted: Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings.

Any improvement?

For #4:

You can change a hidden preference to detect when Firefox is performing crash recovery. What this does is, instead of doing crash recovery automatically, Firefox shows you a screen with a choice to restore particular windows/tabs or just start a new session.

(1) In a new tab, type or paste about:config in the address bar and press Enter/Return. Click the button accepting the risk.

(2) In the search box in the page, type or paste browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes and pause while the list is filtered

(3) Double-click the browser.sessionstore.max_resumed_crashes preference to display an editing field, and change the value to 0 then press Enter or click the blue check mark button to save the change.

Note: modifying hidden settings through about:config is not officially supported, but since I use this modification myself, I feel comfortable providing you this information.
