Recovery of bookmarks & preferences with new install

I had to reset my laptop per manufacturer. When I reinstalled Firefox, it was a new version with none of my bookmarks, etc. Is my old data gone forever or is it recoverable?

So does your system have a Firefox sync account? If No, then any data before the reset will be wiped clean and there is no recovery. Unless you have a Firefox sync account that is the only way possibly to find the data but if not then sync won't do anything but reset all the sync data blank.
