If I close Firefox and save the tabs in restores them when I restart but sometimes when it closes on its own the tabs that open when I restart are from over a year ago. I have saved my tabs numerous times since then so I don't understand why it keeps returning to these old tabs.

This can be a problem with the file sessionstore.js or sessionstore.bak in the Profile Folder

Delete the files sessionstore.js and sessionstore.bak and any existing files sessionstore-##.js with a number in the left part of the name like sessionstore-1.js .
