Many users have found that the Google toolbar can be returned to functionality with Firefox 5 by installing the following add-on. Google needs to test their toolbar with Firefox 5 and change one small item in their code that shows with which versions of Firefox the toolbar is compatible. Add-on Compatibiltiy Reporter adds a "Compatibility" button to the Add-ons > Extensions display.
