Use Ctrl+Shift+click to open the link in a new tab but remain where you are, if Ctrl+click opens new tab in the foreground. The two shortcuts can be reversed and are controlled by Tools > Options > Tabs > "When I open a link in a new tab switch to it immediately".

For more information on tabbed browsing and making opening from a bookmark use the same keyboard shortcut as opening from a link see
