Adware appears at the top of screen when visiting sites

When I visit different sites (e.g., google reader, New York times, etc.), an adware program inserts an advertisement header at the top of a site I visit. This insert will also state that it is not part of the site that I am visiting. Can you tell me how to delete this annoyance. Thanks Ron

Please first update to Firefox 19. Update Firefox to the latest release

Then check for Malware Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware

Finally Reset Firefox Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings
