when i switch to a new tab from my gmail inbox, the screen displays shows 2 windows

example: an open gmail message shows a list of products available. i then click on a new tab, and select a bookmarked site which reviews these products. at this point, the screen splits into two windows: one, a narrow window showing the reviews; and the other, a wider window displaying the gmail message.

this also occurs when i don't open a new tab, and simply click on the bookmarked review site.

this question may seem vague because i want to keep private my gmail and bookmarked sites for security reasons.

This has nothing to do with displaying bookmarks in the sidebar, but with creating bookmark that loads in the sidebar instead of in the main browser window.
You also shouldn't place a tick in the box to "Load this bookmark in the sidebar"

Sounds that you open the bookmark in the sidebar.

Opening in the sidebar is the default for bookmarks that are created via a link or button on a website.

You can check the Properties of a bookmark via the right-click context menu in the sidebar (Ctrl+B; Command+B on Mac).

In the Bookmarks Manager (Bookmarks > Show All Bookmarks) you can click the More button in the Details pane at the bottom right.
Make sure that "Load this bookmark in the sidebar" is not selected.

hi, and thanks for replying so quickly.

i do not use the sidebar menu to select a bookmark, preferring instead to click on "show all bookmarks," or "bookmarks toolbar" or "unsorted bookmarks." sometimes, though, when i create a bookmark, i also click on "add to sidebar;" should i not do that anymore?

if i understand you correctly, in order to avoid my problem, if i am on website "x" and i open a bookmark from the bookmark toolbar, e.g., http://www.nytimes.com/pages/movies/index.html, i should not click on "add to sidebar," correct?

when i wish to bookmark a new page, i usually click on "bookmark this page," and get three choices of folders, including "bookmarks menu."

how do i clear the bookmarks sidebar listings?

thanks very much for your assistance.
