Hangouts opens fine in IE...but when using Firefox, when trying to open a video hangout call, Firefox prompts me to d-load the plug-in, which i do. once the plug in is d-loaded, I click to install it, which it does and tells me it was sucessful....then my PC justs hangs-never actually opens the hanouts chat/video window..even "click here if page doesnt refresh" doesnt work..any suggestions?

As a test I installed the plugin and got two plugins. For some reason, they are set to "Never Activate" upon installation, which hides them from websites. (See screenshot)

You can switch them on from the Add-ons page. Either:

  • Ctrl+Shift+a
  • "3-bar" menu button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons

In the left column, click Plugins. Scroll down to the grayed area and look for two plugins that start with "Google Talk" and change "Never Activate" to "Always Activate".

Then try reloading the hangout page or starting it again. Success?

that's nice, except they never GET THAT FAR to GET on the add-on list-That's my point. the install performs and tells me it is successful, yet never goes into hangouts, NOR ADDS the plug-in/s TO my add-on list

Okay, can you check the following folder to see whether the files are there:

  • C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\plugins\npgoogletalk.dll
  • C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\plugins\npo1d.dll

AppData is hidden by default, so as a shortcut, you can type or paste the following in the Windows Run dialog (hold down Windows key and tap R) and press Enter to open the folder:

%APPDATA%\Mozilla\plugins

Are the Google plugins there?

If the file are there but Firefox is not showing them anywhere on the Add-ons page... Sometimes the pluginreg.dat file becomes corrupted. You can remove it and have Firefox re-scan for plugins.

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" button > Troubleshooting Information
  • Help menu > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, click the "Show Folder" button to launch a new Windows Explorer window showing your settings files.

Leaving that window open, switch back to Firefox and Exit, either:

  • "3-bar" menu button > "power" button
  • File menu > Exit

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename pluginreg.dat to something like pluginreg.old

Start Firefox back up again. (If you want to restore your previous non-private session, use History > Restore Previous Session.)

When you return to the Add-ons page, do the Google plugins show up?

After checking my file folder for "C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\plugins\npgoogletalk.dll • C:\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\plugins\npo1d.dll", there are no entry's for "plugins"... also doing a run cmd for "%APPDATA%\Mozilla\plugins" says it does not exist

If you open

%APPDATA%\Mozilla\

you just have the Firefox folder, or Firefox and Extensions folders?

In that case, it seems the Google installer works differently on your system than mine. Or it just doesn't work despite what it is reporting.

Could you see this thread on Google's forums: https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!msg/voice/AQwswjsi0Uw/Tc4kLSJRerwJ

I get both..under the "extensions" folder, it's empty..under the "firefox" folder, I have "crash reports", "Profiles", both of which are folders, then a file called "profiles.ini"....that's it. Thaks 4 trying..I think I will try to completely uninstall, then re-install Firefox...I guess this thread is consider'd complete

I don't think the solution on Google's forums involves uninstalling Firefox. But if you want to try that, you may need to back up your bookmarks to a safe location. I suggest using both of these processes:

well..a total uninstall/re-install failed to resolve the issue..guess I am stuck using IE as only means to make google talk to work...grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

yeah, those forum links were totally useless

I'm seeing the Google™ Hangouts 0.1.5.1-signed extension in your System Details list.

You did install the plugin?

You can try to run the plugin installer as Administrator (right-click: Run as Administrator).
