How do I disable .part and download files with the original name?

It would be great to be able to watch a movie while it's downloading without having to jump through hoops to do it. I presently do it by explicitly telling VLC to open the .part file. This works until the download is finished at which point the .part file disappears and the player crashes. I then have to start it up again playing the .mp4 file for the rest of the movie. It would be nice to have Firefox just download the file with the original name to make everything straightforward.

Problem is that you're not using Firefox for the download, but rather the download is going thru a 3rd party plugin.

Have you tried VLC support? http://www.videolan.org/support/

What would be nice is if people didn't use E-O-L operating systems for years after they are declared dead and didn't expect 'things' to work as they once did when the software they are using has progressed beyond what the operating system was made to do.
