I can open firefox by right clicking a icon that was installed above above the all programs button in the start window, the clicking browse the internet. When I try to add a shortcut on the desktop window, it says it can't add the shortcut. Is there another way to add the mozilla icon to desktop so I can start with a double left click? Thanks

Hello finisheron, try this way to create the shortcut : on desktop, right-click, select new > shortcut, when you see a dialog box, choose Browse, then find firefox and create the shortcut.

thank you

Hi "Finisher"

  • Right click on the desktop
  • New > Shortcut
  • Browse to eg, "C:\Program Files\Firefox\" ... folder
  • scroll down to "firefox.exe" file
  • [OK] button
  • [Next>] button
  • name your shortcut, eg, "Firefox"
  • [Finish] button

Thanks, After I go thru these steps, when I click the finish button, i get the message "cannot create the shortcut". Any thoughts?

I also just noticed that on the mozilla page info window, it says that this website does not support encryption, and that can't be good.

Do you have the privileges in your xp account to do that (you want Administrator Privileges) ?

if you have it, see if you have the correct command in registry, in the next key HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\.lnk\ShellNew it must be the rundll32.exe appwiz.cpl,NewLinkHere %1

if the registry value is correct, check for virus or malware.

thanks again

I do have administrator privileges. Can you give me a little more info on the steps to check this value? I'm a relative novice at this sort of thing, but I'm confident I can perform this check. Thanks

See: http://www.microsoft.com/resources/documentation/windows/xp/all/proddocs/en-us/regedit_overview.mspx

when you open the HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT find lnk (the first letter is "L" "l"nk) click the (+) to expant click ShellNew and see in the right window the Name(command) type(REG_SZ) Data (rundll32.exe appwiz.cpl,NewLinkHere %1)

thanks again

Your guidance matches my WinXP OS PC. Thank you.

But does it apply to Win7 ?

On my Win7 PC "command" name does not exist.

Is that because Win7 has a different security structure ?

Thanks
