The extension "HTML5 Video for YouTube" from the chromestore uses the built in html5 player frome Chrome to play videos on Youtube, and it plays them very well. Is Firefox capable of the same thing with an appropriate addon or options tweak? I read in mozilla support that Firefox has a built in html5 player too but didn't anything about how to "turn it on". link to "HTML5 Video for YouTube" : http://goo.gl/ZUR7F

Firefox 26 and possibly Firefox 25 and 24 may be able to handle more formats by setting the media.gstreamer.enabled pref to true (it is true by default in Fx 26 and later, but false in the current release).
If you have installed the proper GStreamer libraries then Firefox might be able to display H.264 encoded files.

  • Bug 541286 - MPEG2 and MPEG4/H264 support for HTML5
  • Bug 794282 - Enable GStreamer in official builds (Linux: media.gstreamer.enabled)
