After upgrading to Windows 8 FireFox wasn't on my computer so I downloaded it. After downloading it I signed in to my account but my passwords, bookmarks, etc were not there. How do I get my profile back? I have changed my folder view to include hidden files. The only file in my profile folder is xxxxx.default with today's date. I do have my bookmarks on my iPad but I am afraid to sync for fear it will overwrite the ipad with the empty computer profile instead of the other way around. And I don't think my passwords are on the ipad Firefox - are they? HELP!

Hi belindawolfe, there is a file a level up named profiles.ini. After copying your old profile folder over into the new Profiles folder, you need to add the folder name to profiles.ini in order to be able to use it. I think there are other threads with advice on how best to do that.

Did your upgrade create a folder named C:\Windows.old? If so, your old Firefox profile folder is likely to be in there. The path to it will depend on what Windows you had before.

XP: Look in that folder for Documents and Settings\username\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

Vista/7: Look for in that folder for Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

Anything there?

What is the Mozilla product you have on your iPad? There used to be a program named Firefox Home, but I don't know whether that is working any more.

I'm not a Sync expert. I suggest you pause on reconnecting to your old Firefox Sync account until someone can explain the safest way to do that. You'll need to track down your old Recovery Key / Sync Key. Don't generate a new one, as that will render your old data inaccessible.

Only one file: xxxxxx.default and the date is today 12/27.

The Mozilla product on my iPhone and iPad is Sync for Firefox.

I have a sync key!! How do I use that to recover my old data?

Enter all details like the account name (email address) and password and the 26-character Sync key manually to connect to an existing sync account instead of using the 12-character code to pair a device if pairing isn't possible.

  1. open "Tools > Options > Sync" or "Firefox > Set Up Sync"
  2. click "Set Up Firefox Sync" to go to "Firefox Sync Setup"
  3. click "I Have an Account" : Connect
  4. click "I don't have the device with me" at the bottom to enter the account settings (email, password, sync key)

Check the Sync options when you have used Sync before and want to keep previously stored data on the Sync server.

  • click the "Sync Options" button at the bottom to select what to sync (Sync Options only affect the first sync)

Ok, I did everything cor-el suggested. It went just as expected - it verified my sync key and then then said syncing!! BUT my data is still not there. So, I tried to do it again but 'sync set up' is no longer an option. My only option is' Sync Now'. Now what??

Hi belindawolfe, I meant

C:\Windows.old\Users\username\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles

if you have a C:\Windows.old folder. Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks jscher2000, I found the old profile in windows.old - YEA! But, I, apparently don't know what to do with it!!! I tried coping it into the current profile folder - that didn't work. So I closed Firefox and deleted the new profile - that was a HUGE mistake - I couldn't open Firefox. So I removed Firefox from my programs and reinstalled it - that didn't work because I didn't delete the new profile. I kept getting the message that Firefox was inaccessible. So I deleted the new profile and reinstalled Firefox AGAIN (3rd time). So.... I now have Firefox working, but am not accessing my old profile. I know where the old profile file is, but I don't know how to get Firefox to read it or how to move it. Copy and paste didn't work!!

You can also use the Profile Manager to register an existing profile.

You can use the Profile Manager to create a new profile and click the "Choose Folder" button to choose the location of an existing profile as the location of the new profile.
Firefox will recognize and use that folder and you will have access to all personal data that is stored in this profile.
