Before you remove an account in Thunderbird, move any messages for that account that you want to keep into a local folder. Removing an account will take all messages associated with that account that are not in a local folder with it.

Press the alt key if the Menu Bar is not showing.

From the Menu Bar select Tools-Account Settings

Select the account

Account Actions-Remove Account

Try reading the instructions again. The option is there.

Maybe this will help. On my thunderbird I go to Edit then Account Settings then Account Actions{bottom left} then choose Remove Account.
