upgrading to 45.02 from 45 "says an already newer version exist
I have had this problem before in Mozilla forum called "Upgrading to new version 45"
The problem is I upgrade from version 45 to 45.02 and as I was installing it on my Yosemite Mac OS it said "a newer item name Firefox.app already exists", which it definitely did not.
I believe a file on my Mac may have been change so that the installation program believes it is a newer file version. I know both versions are valid as I performed a PGP check as well as a SHA512 verification on the installation. version 45 sha512=2cd85e760e3c94dc0875dc27704c53d29db204e57a591f63ab1957095460926d8ceb564cd3f24b91a0c55010a1e3b26ace645612a960f26b21f4f6a27ca952bc
version 45.02 sha512=33faea83a5a318f0cad9a7cfb6e1e89a417d86ed1f35f7e31c58c016b5d388f1cddec81364c168beeb357394dfa69eb9186867274e4fb36533621ef9bc07b388
Since I had this same problem happen before install version 45 I completely uninstalled Firefox before installing.

The current Firefox is v46, but some have been having problems with it.
If there is a problem when you try to update a program, the best thing to do is to remove the old, and do a full install of the new.
No resolution for this an has continue from previous versions. I believe this is a hack on the operating system Yosemite but I am unable to determine where the version information for Firefox is kept.

Sometimes the Mac OS gets confused by the file dates in the Firefox Disk Image installer.
If there a problem with updating or with the permissions then best is to download the full version and trash the currently installed Firefox application to do a clean reinstall.
Download a new copy of the Firefox application and save the Disk Image file to the desktop
- Firefox 46.0.1: *https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/all/
- Trash the currently installed Firefox application (open the Applications folder in the Finder and drag the Firefox application to the Trash) to do a clean reinstall
- Install the new version that you have downloaded

Your personal data like bookmarks is stored in the Firefox profile folder, so you won't lose personal data when you uninstall and reinstall or update Firefox, but make sure NOT to remove personal data when you uninstall Firefox as that will remove all Firefox profile folders and you lose your personal data.
