Use : Sort by 'Date' and 'Descending' and 'unthreaded'.

Do you use any program like CCleaner? A program which can clean up files ? It sounds like you are choosing specific settings, which are ok for that session, but are then lost reverting to a previous setting.

If yes, please make sure Thunderbird files and folders are exempt. You do not want programs like CCleaner (and some Anti-virus products can also clean up files) accessing and cleaning up a session file before that information has been stored correctly.
