gmail changed their system and Thunderbird accommodated this in 60.9.1 and version 68. Version 52 will never receive this fix.

You can imagine, we recommend you use version 68.

And what happens to all of my add-ons that won't work in the newer version of Thunderbird?

The choice is entirely yours. Find replacement add-ons that work, do without the ones that don't because the add-on author abandoned you- or stay on an obsoleted partially working version.

You are two years behind, not one. The current release is 68, not 60.
