I recently updated to Thunderbird 91.1.2 and I really like most of it but there is one feature that I would like to restore from previous versions. I preferred it when the attachments pane was in the top right corner. Now it has been moved below the message (when composing a message) and for me it's more difficult to keep track of my attachments. Is there a way to move in back? Thanks for your help

MoreLayouts v6.7 (also on ATN) lets you configure Compose window attachments list location/behavior.

YES! This is exactly what I was looking for. Thank you so much. I really appreciate it

Whenever a file is being dragged from another application into Thunderbird, the other application's window will always overlap Thunderbird's. There is literally no way to view whatever attachment options there might be, because the window from which the attachment is being dragged will always obscure it.

Rolling back to the previous functionality here makes sense - it was previously possible to arrange for a corner of Thunderbird's window to be visible, and therefore see the attachment being added. Now it is not.

Now, all you have to do is drag onto the write window and not just some small pane in the corner. What is this other application that cannot be resized to not occupy your entire display and completely obscure Thunderbird's also very resizable write window?

I don't mind the new drag and drop functionality, my issue is with the attachments pane now being located at the bottom. I preferred it at that top where (I feel) it was easier to see. I understand some people may like it better at the bottom by why not include the option to choose for those of us who liked it better at the top? I'm going to roll back to a previous version and hope this will be addressed by a future update.

Windows explorer, usually.

For the avoidance of doubt, Thunderbird's new "Add an attachment" window takes up the whole space of the "write" window, and the "Add an attachment" text appears right in the middle of it.

Are you seriously suggesting that every time I want to attach something to an email I should:

  • Click "write"
  • resize the Thunderbird "write" Window (which by default fills most of the screen, as you'd expect) so that it only takes up one half (which half does not matter)
  • resize the window that I'm dragging _from_ so that it takes up only the _other_ half of the screen
  • drag the item across
  • resize both windows back to normal size
  • write and send the email

every time I want to add an attachment?

Sounds like your real problem is lack of enough display real estate and nothing to do with Thunderbird's new attachment drag-and-drop UI. It seems you have both File Explorer and the write windows occupying nearly all of your display area and aren't willing to resize either one of them to a resonable size that would let you easily access both of them to drag from one to the other! How that is Thunderbird's fault beats me. Both Windows are perfectly resizable, even if just a tiny bit, to leave that visible corner that you talk about. Are you saying you can't resize File Explorer so that not even a corner of the write window is visible? I can't even remember the last time I had to resize Thunderbird's write window to get anything done in it. Also, the write window retains its size from the last time it was open, it doesn't reset back to some default large size that you have to resize each time it opens, so I wonder where you got that default size from.

I don't have that big of a screen, at 17", or that high a resolution at 1600x900, and yet I don't have to resize Thunderbird's write window or File Explorer to drag attachments across. In fact, the write window and File Explorer overlap each other in their current untouched sizes, yet I have absolutely zero problems dragging across as long as just a fraction of the write window is visible alongside the File Explorer window. Also, when Thunderbird's write window has focus (is in the foreground) and I drag from the partially visible File Explorer window, Tbird's write window doesn't lose focus (goes to the background). It remains fully visible while I drag across. It only loses focus when I click inside the File Explorer window, which I don't do because I'm dragging stuff across.

Are you seriously expecting to use drag and drop when you have both the source and destination windows so big that they are obscuring each other?

Besides, you can always use the Attach button if drag and drop isn't usable for you.

I immediately noticed this upon update. I hated it then and especially hate it now that I just fired off an email with an attachment I thought I removed. You guys are burying attachments at the bottom now and they get lost very easily - especially on 27"+ / QHD+ screens.

I also have no problem with the new functionality of "drag anywhere in the window" to add an attachment - it looks great, keep it! The issue is hiding your attached files at the bottom of the email.

There is no discernible advantage in removing attachments from the top right where this critically important portion of your email was incredibly easy to see. At least give us an option in settings to revert back to the old behavior.
