how to share a URL with Firefox

more options

Now, in the old Firefox, you used to be able to select "Email Link" to send a URL to someone by e-mail in your favorite e-mail client. I used to do that routinely, sending links via Thunderbird. I'm now using FF93.0, and all I see is "Share", which, when you point it to "Mail" it dumps you in Chrome. Now, in my FF prefs, I have specified Content Type->mailto->Use Thunderbird, so why it's dumping me in Chrome makes no sense.

How do I use Firefox to share a URL in Thunderbird like I used to be able to do?

Hi Dan, it's still possible. I'm on Windows, so check me if your menus are different:

(1) File menu > Email Link

(2) Optional Email Link button for the main part of the toolbar -- see Customize Firefox controls, buttons and toolbars

Thank you. That works. They moved that capability from the File dropdown, and into the toolbar customization menu. Still a little weird why File->Share->Mail throws you into Chrome.

"Share" should be using your MacOS system sharing dialog, so maybe Chrome somehow make itself the default mail client??

Right again. I just moved up to Big Sur, so lots of stuff needs redoing. On a MacOS, it isn't trivial to change the default e-mail client. You need to go into the Mail app, and enter a lot of info that it may or may not like, and then go to Preferences. An easier way by far is using the Microsoft Set Default Mail App tool for the Mac. Yes, Microsoft! https://download.microsoft.com/download/7/D/5/7D52637E-1E80-4AEF-A63A-0D7B4B7CD626/SetDefaultMailApp.zip. It just pops up and asks what e-mail client you want to be default, and offers Thunderbird as an option. You're not installing anything.

Once I do this, File->Share->Mail goes straight to Thunderbird.

Excellent. You have choices now.
